I Need Yoga: Om T.O. & Giveaway

I used to be so good at going to yoga twice a week – especially when I was working at my studio (now that I am in school and working at my new job, I just don’t have the time to also work at the studio). But I need and want more yoga in my life. Lately, I have been trying to go once a week but it’s hard to get my butt there. I honestly never thought I’d love yoga but I do and it’s often what my body and more importantly my mind craves.

We put a lot of tension and strain on ourselves. Whether it is from work, school, running, CrossFit, travel, cooking, whatever it is… our bodies are often under stress. I took to yoga to help me alleviate some of my stresses. To remind myself to breathe, let things go and be present in the moment. These are things that I still work and I definitely would not consider myself “good” at yoga but I try hard and enjoy working on my practice. Lately, I have not been working on my practice. Fail. I have totally neglected my at-home everyday yoga series and haven’t been at my studio very often. But I miss it and I am promising myself to take my socks off and get my downward dog on!

There are so many amazing ways to incorporate yoga into life: at home, outside in the sun or trying out new classes at different studios… I really don’t have an excuse. I’m promising on this bloggy blog to step up my yoga game.

Last week, I found out about Om T.O. – which is a free all day outdoor yoga event in Toronto on June 21st. Om T.O. was inspired by NYC’s Mind over Madness event, where thousands gather to practice yoga on June 21st in Times Square. So Om T.O. was created to bring people from all walks of life together with some of Toronto’s best yoga teachers to celebrate the strength of body, mind and community. Last year, more than 1,000 people participated.

I am super excited to attend this year!


The event is totally free. It is from 9am to 5pm at the Distillery District – a cool area in Toronto. You can check out the full schedule here. I am planing on going to the vinyassa class at 1:15pm for sure – anyone care to join me? Pretty please?

  1. Ahhhh you tempt me with an awesome yoga giveaway I can’t enter and an amazing event I can’t attend! Boooo! :) Jk. I’m actually in my best friend’s wedding that weekend so even if it was here I couldn’t go, so don’t feel bad lol. Anywayyyy have a fab weekend and GO TO YOGA! Or sign up for yogaglo (no they really don’t pay me I just love them) it’s super cheap and they have amazing classes as short as 15 minutes (and thousands and thousands of them) so there are no excuses. Or just rock a few sun salutations, it has everything you need – forward bend, arm balance (chaturanga technically), backbend, and hip opener. :)

  2. Yoga! Burlington Vermont does an outdoor yoga event like that too and it’s really fun! I’ve been neglecting my studio because life is getting in the way but I actually keep my yoga mat downstairs, rolled out, ready to go and have committed to just do something everyday- whether it turns into a 30 min flow or I sit in childs pose for 5 min. some simple twists laying down are always nice too!

    Sadly I have a race on the 21st — otherwise I would totally join you for Om T.O.! And as for the contest, my favourite yoga pose is that one where you’re on your back with your feet over your head and then you slowly roll down — releases all the tension in my back!

    1. That’s called plow pose. It’s a great one to roll out the spine and counters backbends.

      That’s also one of my favourite poses!

  4. Love yoga! I try to do it once or twice a week as well. You should look into the Do You Yoga 30 day yoga challenge on youtube. It’s completely free and the videos are no longer than 25 minutes (some are only like, 11 minutes long). It’s a great way to still incorporate yoga into your schedule, even if you are packed for time. I wish I was in the toronto area for this event/giveaway. sounds awesome!!

  5. I’m a Toronto reader! Great blog – one of my favourites to read, because you are so real and honest and inspiring, and a lot of journey that you’re going through now is either something I experienced a few years ago (when it comes to food) or something I’m experiencing now (when it comes to strength and Crossfit-esqe things).

    I don’t do much yoga, unless it’s at home, but it is something I’ve been meaning to get into – I said that for years about strength training and when I finally did it, there was no going back. I love the cobra pose because it just makes my body feel so good, especially when I feel tight!

  9. I never thought I would say this, but I have grown to love yoga too. It was a big part of my marathon training, but I have been slacking in the yoga department lately. I’m hoping the new gym I will join in our new town will have yoga!

  10. I have felt similarly about yoga! I just bought my summer pass yesterday, and I am all in. I can’t wait to get my butt onto the mat more than once in a blue moon for a real hot class. I love practicing at home, but it isn’t as focused for me as in the studio. Wish I could enter that giveaway!

  11. I love a good give away! I’ve recently been trying to step up my yoga game as well because my body hates me from all the weight training and running. My muscles have become super tight and it’s effecting my knees when I run which is not good. I’ve decide to take the month off of running and focus solely on tuning into my body through yoga. I have a pass for a month at Yoga Tree if you ever want to hitch along for a class. I can be your accountability buddy in a non-creepy way of course lol. That outdoor yoga event sounds pretty sweet. I will definitely have to head down there. I had no idea about it so thanks for sharing. Toronto always has so many awesome things going on in the summer – it’s pure magic.

  12. Oh, I hope I have a good chance. I’ve been wanting to add yoga to my workouts and my life so bad! But I don’t have the money to afford a membership fee at a studio. AND I need a yoga mat. Favorite yoga pose–I’d have to say warrior. It makes me feel powerful!

  15. I seriously need to get back into yoga. I definitely go through phases where sometimes I practice a few times a week. Then for a month it’ll be nothing. I’m also in need of a mat!! Mine is torn to shreds and is passed the point of being well loved.
