On A Quest

Good morning friends! How was your long weekend? Well, it’s back to work… so bizzare that I said work and not school. Yup still can’t fathom that I’m not in class right now. #realworld

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful comments about my upcoming half-marathon! I ran 10km yesterday and am recovering with a yoga session this evening. Feeling great!

On Friday, I mentioned that I received a sample pack from Quest.

Snail mail is seriously under-rated. It’s way more exciting receiving a package than an email.

Quest bars have dominated my Instagram feed for months… they are the new thing to ‘gram now that people are over posting their Starbucks cups. Everyone raves about these protein bars but I had yet to try them.

First, they had to pass my ingredients and nutrition test. Research time…

  • No added sugar, sugar alcohols* or artificial sweeteners: sweetened with lo han guo (a natural herb) stevia (another herb) and erythritol*, which is technically a sugar alcohol but is much better absorbed by our bodies.
  • No glycerin
  • No soy products
  • Gluten free
  • Short ingredients list
  • Approximately 20g of protein (whey protein isolate) per bar

They passed… yay!

Vanilla Almond Crunch, Peanut Butter Supreme, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Mixed Berry Bliss, Chocolate Brownie, Apple Pie, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cinnamon Roll, Coconut Cashew…

…just to name a few.

I’ve had one nearly every day for about a week. Quest overload? My thoughts:

  • Satisfying: They are super filling. Like wow. I did not want another snack two seconds later… nice!
  • Taste: I find them quite sweet but enjoyed a few flavors (keep reading).
  • Texture: I am not a huge fan of the texture at room temperature so I popped them in the microwave for 15-20 seconds (as per Instagram suggestions) and thought they tasted much better.
  • Aftertaste? I found them to have an aftertaste – Davida mentioned that some people are sensitive to erythritol so maybe that’s it?
  • On-the-go: They are a great pre/post workout on-the-go option. If you’re pressed on time, it’s far easier to throw a Quest bar in your gym bag than a bowl of oatmeal.

Favorite flavors? Coconut Cashew and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Verdict? Good but not blown away. I know, I know… you Quest lovers are probably freaking out. But I don’t want to lie to you (never have, never will). I did like a few flavors but the texture and after-taste are not wins in my books.

Future? They are a bit pricey but I’ll probably splurge on my favorites every once and awhile when I’m feeling kitchen lazy.

I’ve never had a Quest bar because of my allergies, but it’s kind of nice to see someone who’s not going all gaga over them :P And I usually try to avoid things that have sugar alcohols in them too because my stomach is a little sensitive to them. Favourite bars are the ones that come from my kitchen ;)

  2. I’ve never had Quest bars before. I like that they have a ton of flavors to choose from. I don’t usually eat bars because I never feel totally satisfied. I think if I can eat it in 4 bites it doesn’t really count much in my mind haha, so probably psychological.

  3. I so want to try Quest bars, I’ve heard that the cookie dough heated is delicious. I generally don’t go for protein bars as I like to try and get my protein from more natural sources but these are on my ‘to try’ list for sure :)

  4. I did the sample box a few months ago, but I was disappointed that it was right before they released chocolate chip cookie dough, I still want to find that one! I definitely found that they were better heated up, although I wish they had a bit of a crunch of something to them…some of the flavours I really liked (Peanut Butter Supreme, Apple Pie) but others definitely lacked (I kind of hated the cinnamon roll one….)

  5. Thanks for the honest review! I actually love Quest bars – I don’t get the after taste, and I like the texture because it really feels like you’re chewing on something substantial. Plus, you can’t beat the nutrition profile. BUT if I eat a whole one on an empty stomach, I definitely feel a little funky … I have a super sensitive stomach to begin with.

  6. I love your honesty! I do find a bit of an aftertaste as well and find that they need to be microwaved too. I love the cinnamon roll flavor and chocolate brownie though!! I haven’t been able to try very many other flavors unfortunately :( Quest needs to send some to me ;)

    And omg so excited about your half marathon!!! You will ROCK it! :D

  7. Glad to hear this honest review. I ALWAYS see people posting about Quest bars and I am so intrigued, like can they really be that amazing?! I want to try them myself to find out. Guaranteed I would like the same flavors as you haha

  8. I feel the EXACT same way about Quest Bars. They’re good but they don’t necessarily wow me. Except the chocolate peanut butter one- that I will say blew me away. Glad you didn’t give them 5 stars just because they sent you a sample pack!

  9. I completely agree about the chocolate peanut butter being among the best! I don’t notice a weird after taste, but have heard that from quite a few people. Overall, I think I like the the all- natural line better because they seem to have a softer texture than the original line.

  10. Love Quest Bars. They’re pretty much the best ones out there! There’s a few others I like, like Luna, Clif, Think Thin, Simple Bites Gourmet, etc..but these take the cake! I love the Chocolate Chip Cookie dough the best! The brownie is pretty good as well!

  11. I’ve only gotten to try Quest bars one time and I was a little off-put by the chewy texture. I never thought of putting them in the microwave, but I think that would make a huge difference. I definitely need to give them another try!

  12. That’s great that they sent you samples to try and you were able to decide what flavors you do and don’t like. I think my favorites are the coconut cashew and cinnamon roll ones a lot. Like you said I think they are really filling and a great choice when your away or don’t have time in the kitchen. With their price tag I usually stick to a homemade snack when I’m at home.

  13. Personally, my favourite bars are my home made ones. But I have tried the mixed berry bliss bar and while it’s a great pre/post workout snack, I didn’t like the texture. So I will microwave it next time as you advised, to see if it tastes better. I also didn’t realise they have such a wide variety and I will definitely be trying the chocolate peanut butter and coconut cashew flavoured bars.
